Anatomical neo-brutalist cover image showing modafinil orexin wakefulness network, dopamine transporter modulation, prefrontal focus, and sleep deprivation resistance.
Modafinil functions like a high-contrast brain network in the orexin-dopamine axis for wakefulness and executive function.

⚠ Medication Requiring a Prescription

Modafinil is a prescription drug in Türkiye (Alertec, Provigil). This page is for educational purposes only and does not constitute advice for medication use. It is not legal to use without a prescription. Always consult a physician before any use.

What is Modafinil?

Modafinil is a drug developed in French laboratories in the 1970s and received FDA approval in 1998. eugeroic (alertness enhancing) It is medicine. It is used in the first-line treatment of narcolepsy, excessive sleepiness due to sleep apnea, and sleep disorders caused by night shift work. Although it produces a strong alertness effect similar to amphetamines, it has a much lower addiction and abuse potential thanks to its different mechanisms.

Large systematic reviews have shown that modafinil significantly improves attention, executive functions, and working memory in healthy compliant individuals as well. A 2015 Battleday and Brem meta-analysis concluded that the effects on cognitive performance were much more pronounced in long-duration tasks than in short tasks and suggested that modafinil is a “true cognitive enhancer.”

Mechanism of Effect

Modafinil orexin activation, dopamine transporter modulation, histamine wakefulness, and prefrontal performance mechanism visual.
Mechanism focus: orexin wakefulness, dopamine modulation, and prefrontal continuity.

The exact mechanism of modafinil is still under investigation; but the primary targets are well documented:

SystemImpactConclusion
Dopamine transporter (DAT)reuptake inhibitionIncreased dopamine in striatum
Orexin/Hypocretinindirect activationWakefulness circuits stimulation
norepinephrineincreaseStrengthening attention and working memory
histamineH1 receptor activationIncreased cortical arousal
GABAreductionInhibitory tone decreased, arousal increased

Clinical Evidence

A 2015 meta-analysis covering 24 studies on the cognitive effects of modafinil (Battleday & Brem, European Neuropsychopharmacology), especially attention, learning and problem solving found strong evidence in their fields. Effects are more pronounced for long and cognitively demanding tasks; On simple measures of attention, effects remain mixed.

In terms of addiction potential, numerous studies have found modafinil to be much less prone to abuse than amphetamines. However, the risk is not zero due to its dopaminergic mechanism.

Dosage Protocol
